A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT VICKI NANCE: Dear Navajo school family: We believe one of our greatest responsibilities is to communicate transparently and often with you, our school community. It is our hope that accurate and up-to-date correspondence will help you make well-informed decisions for your family. Nothing is more important to Navajo Public Schools than the safety and health of our students, our employees and their families. When we work together, we can provide the best care for all involved. Today, we learned that a school employee at Navajo School was recently exposed to COVID-19. The individual does not have symptoms and has tested negative. In accordance with CDC guidelines, the employee will quarantine for 14 days. We are working closely with Jackson County Health Department officials and they have confirmed that no additional action needs to be taken by students, staff or the school at this time. Navajo Public Schools will continue to clean and disinfect surfaces inside all district buildings/buses. Additionally, we will continue to follow CDC guidelines as recommended, and we will continue to use our electrostatic machines to sanitize our classrooms and buildings. As more cases are being confirmed across the state, it is important to remain vigilant. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath. If you or any member of your family exhibit these symptoms, you are encouraged to contact your medical provider for advice immediately. Symptoms usually appear 2-14 days after exposure. The CDC recommends the following best practices to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Avoid close contact with those who are sick. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects. Practice social distancing, leaving at least six feet between you and other people. When you are unable to practice social distancing, wear a face covering. Our greatest priority is the safety of our students, staff and community members. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your family. If you have any questions, please contact Navajo School at 580-482-7742. Thank you for your support of Navajo Public Schools. The Navajo School Board met on Wednesday, August 5th to make evidence based decisions for the upcoming school year. Navajo Public Schools has decided to move the first day of school from Thursday, August 13th to Thursday, August 20th due to the current high-risk level of Covid-19 in Jackson County. As we look forward to starting school, Navajo will be assessing weekly updates from the Covid Alert map provided by OSSBA (ossba.org/map) and guidelines set forth by the State Education Department 's safety protocol guidance, as well as the county-level case data as reported by the State Health Department. The color levels on the OSSBA map will guide us on when it is safe to come to school. Details on whether we will meet traditionally or virtually will be released Friday, August 14,2020. An updated school calendar will be posted today. Virtual Meet the Teacher has moved to Thursday, August 13th and we will also have a virtual New Student and 7th grade orientation offered virtually. Navajo teachers will be in contact with parents and students to set-up and plan for a great virtual meet the teacher day soon.

Dear Navajo Family,

As Superintendent of Navajo Public Schools, I want to express my gratitude for your patience and partnership! I know our students and parents are eager to know what school is going to look like this year. We have tried to wait to communicate with you in order to have the most up to date information moving into the 2020-2021 school year!

Please keep in mind that the challenges we are all facing with COVID change daily. We need to all have a POSITIVE OUTLOOK and try not to get bogged down in all the negativity.

The safety of our students and staff are TOP priority, and at the same time our goal is to host a Positive School environment for our students/staff to come to and have the most normal school day as possible each and every day!

Yes, we are planning to have school start on August 13, 2020! We will have many safety Precautions in place, along with extra custodians this year to ramp up cleaning! SOME changes you will notice are: Water bottle refill station swill replace water fountains, social distancing will be encouraged. At this time, masks will be strongly encouraged …but not mandated however, Masks will be required on the bus routes, as social distancing won’t be possible. Parents are welcome to bring their children to school! Visitors will be served curbside, as we want to limit entry into our school buildings.

We are even installing UV-C Lights in all of our HVAC systems to improve the indoor air quality and kill germs and viruses in our buildings!

Our Leadership Team is working on a document to answer lots of questions about the procedures of the 2020-2021 school year! We should have Draft#1 out by Wednesday, July 22, 2020! We will have administrator emails listed in this Q&A for our parents to contact, with any questions/concerns/input! Remember….this will be DRAFT#1!

We recently posted an UPDATED 2020-2021 school calendar on Facebook! Please take a few minutes to look at it! We have added in 2 virtual days a month, which was highly approved of in the parent survey we sent out in June! These days will help prepare students and staff for long term Distance Learning, IF THE NEED ARISES. Please note, that the situation we are in with COVID is unpredictable and ever changing! IF and WHEN it looks like we won’t NEED long term Distance Learning this school year, we could take another look at our school calendar and remove the Monthly Distance Learning Days! What a BLESSING that would be!

The State School Board has a meeting scheduled next week, as well! I anticipate specific direction from the State School Board in a few decisions we are in the process of making. We are also in contact with local, County and State health officials and value their input on our Return to School procedures, as well! We will be following state, federal and CDC guidelines!

IF you, as a parent, have specific questions/concerns please email administrators at Navajo School. Email addresses available on the school website www.navajo.k12.ok.us.

Thank you for choosing Navajo Public Schools for your children’s education! We are Thankful for each and every member of the Navajo Family!

Respectfully,

Vicki Nance

We have a new board approved School Calendar as of yesterday July 14th. There are 2 Virtual days per month starting in September. These will be used to prepare us in case of another extended school closure due to Covid-19. We will have 2 school days in August (the 21st and 28th) to train students on how to use our online platform of Google Classroom while being at school. However, starting in September on those days highlighted yellow on the calendar students will not be at school but will be required to complete the classwork given those days through our online platform or via paper packets that will be handed out the Thursday before. Thank you for your support of Navajo Public Schools this school year. Emergency distance learning in April and May required a monumental team effort between our teachers, staff and families. I am proud of what we accomplished by working together. We plan to return to school in the fall and are excited to welcome our students and teachers back into our buildings. However, it is important for us to understand your preferences with regard to the upcoming school year. Your input is critical as we work toward putting plans in place that accommodate the wide variety of needs our students, staff members and their families may have. Navajo Public Schools plans to reopen at this time as scheduled for the 2020-2021 school year. We are focused on the safest and most practical return options and that is where we need our families help. We will continue to monitor CDC and state recommendations due to the changing nature of the Covid-19 pandemic. Please login to your students google classroom account and take the survey as it will help us plan for the upcoming school year. Please have it completed by Monday July 6th. Please complete only one survey per household. No plan for reopening for the 2020-2021 school year has been approved at this time. The questions in the survey are designed to help us understand parents preferences as we plan for coming back to school.

Dear Navajo family:

Today, state officials announced they will recommend to the state Board of Education that Oklahoma students not return to the classroom for the remainder of the current school year, as our state continues to fight the spread of COVID-19. They will instead recommend a continuous learning plan that will allow students to complete the school year at home. It is important to note that this decision is not final until the state Board of Education meets on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 and votes to approve the recommendation.

We are sharing this information with you in advance, however, so that you can begin to prepare accordingly for your family. We understand this recommendation is in the best interest of everyone’s health, which is our greatest priority as a district. If approved, this also means that all extracurricular activities and special events will be canceled as well. Making these difficult decisions, we believe, is simply the right thing to do for our students, our staff and our community.
We do have good news: Navajo is developing a plan to ensure your child will continue to have opportunities to learn and to grow academically, especially with parental support. Because we are unable to safely gather together, these lessons and activities will primarily be delivered and communicated virtually. As you can imagine, this is a significant transition for our students and our teachers. Navajo will spend the next two weeks planning for this effort and will share details with your family as soon as they are available. Teachers and support staff members will hear from their principals soon as they gather input regarding the next phase of the school closure.
For students, it likely will be sad and disappointing to learn that school as they know it will not resume this year. Please give them a safe place to express their feelings and to vent about the changes in their life. For our seniors and their parents, we know it is an especially difficult time. We will do everything possible to ensure their efforts are recognized and celebrated in special and unique ways. This is an unfair situation, but please reassure them that it does not diminish their achievements. In fact, it will become one more example of how they demonstrated their strength as a Navajo Indian.
We have posted resources on our school website: www.navajo.k12.ok.us. The site also includes recommendations from the CDC about protecting your health and the health of your loved ones. We ask you to please follow their advice by: (1) washing your hands regularly; (2) staying at home, if you can; and (3) practicing social distancing of at least six feet from others.
The meals that you see other schools serving their students during the school closure are offered through a program that Navajo Public Schools does not qualify for at this time; however, the state has requested a waiver for schools that do not qualify and we are waiting to hear if it is approved. As of today, March 23, 2020,this waiver has not been approved. We will notify our community if the waiver gets approved, and if/when we are able to participate in this meal service for our students.
This is an unprecedented situation, and it has required an unprecedented response. We can still take care of our students, though. This is a community that sticks together in challenging times, and we know this experience will be no different. As soon as we identify our next steps, we will share them with you.
Please stay safe. As always, we appreciate your support of Navajo Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Vicki Nance

Dear Navajo parents and staff:

Yesterday afternoon, the state Board of Education voted to close all Oklahoma schools, effective immediately, until at least April 6, 2020 in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. This includes Navajo Public Schools. Additionally, there will be no school activities during this time.

While state officials mandated schools to close for two weeks following spring break, they also encouraged administrators to prepare for the possibility of longer-term closures, if it becomes necessary. At least 35 other states across the country also have made the decision to close schools statewide in the interest of public health.

Oklahoma schools are not expected to be required to make-up the missed days. At this time, schools have been instructed by the state Department of Education not to provide online, home-based or distance learning for students.

This is an unprecedented situation, and it continues to evolve by the hour. We know this uncertainty can cause anxiety and worry, but we want to assure you that Navajo is doing everything possible to ensure the needs of students and employees will be met during this unique time. Employees will receive information about their responsibilities during the school closure over the next few days.

We encourage you to comply with what health officials have recommended as well. If you can, please stay home and enjoy family time. If you must go out, please practice social distancing, allowing at least six feet between you and other individuals. If you have questions about COVID-19, please contact your medical professional or the county health department. You also can learn more about how to prevent the illness by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/prevention.html

Communication will be key during the next two weeks. It is our hope that accurate and up-to-date correspondence will combat fear and panic, as well as help you make well-informed decisions for your family. As a district, we will be sending correspondence to you by Facebook and all-calls. You also can get the latest information by visiting www.navajo.k12.ok.us.

For Navajo, there is nothing more important than the safety and health of our students, staff and community. We want you to be safe, and we appreciate your flexibility and understanding. The Navajo community is strong, and we will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Vicki Nance

Dear Navajo Public Schools Families and Community Members,

Regarding the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) and other communicable diseases, we believe it is best to be prepared with preventative, containment and management measures. The health and safety of our students, staff and families are of utmost importance; therefore, we want to share safety precautions that have been set forth by state and federal officials.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health and the Oklahoma State Department of Education are partnering to provide specific guidance regarding Spring Break and other travels for our school families, students and district staff.

Individuals returning from travel to China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, Japan or any other Level 2 or 3 country as identified by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should self-quarantine for a period of 14 days before returning to school. This applies to all students, teachers, and other school or district staff.

Steps for returning travelers from Level 2 or 3 countries:
  1. Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also watch for cough or trouble breathing.
  2. Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school for this 14-day period. Discuss your work situation with your district before returning to work or school.
  3. Do not take public transportation, taxis, or ride-shares during the time you are practicing social distancing.
  4. Avoid crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public.
  5. Keep your distance from others (about 6 feet).
Please refer frequently to the CDC Travelers Guidance as other countries may be elevated to Level 2 or 3 at any time.

IF you travel out of the United States, please notify your student’s school.

IF a staff member or student has been exposed to COVID-19, contact the Jackson County Health Department at 580-482-7308, your physician, and your student’s school. Students and their parents should call their student’s school site to report absences and exposure to the virus. Please communicate with your school Principal.

Thank you for your continued efforts to keep our students and staff healthy and safe. We will send additional information as it is available and needed.

Sincerely,

Vicki Nance

Superintendent

Starting on Mon,Oct. 8, all elementary students will be going to the new gym in the mornings before school. Your elementary student was given a note on Friday that explains the details about the changes to the morning drop off procedures. It should be in their backpack. The busses will be dropping the elementary students off at the east doors of the new gym. If you drop your children off, please pull in a parking space so the driving lane will not be blocked and busses and traffic can move quickly through campus. The doors will open at 7:30. No longer should students go to the front of the elementary in the mornings, unless they are dropped off after 7:50.
